that error is only displayed when an attempt to reset the TMOUT variable
is done. check the initialization scripts being run during log-in as you
might be setting it twice (like if one of the startup scripts in your
~/.bash_profile runs the /etc/profile)

shot in the dark but who knows... ;-)
