on our box with amdxp1500/512 ram we can handle up to 12 connections/modems. 
we use equinox multiport serial adapters.

not sure about this....  others might have opinions on this but as for our 
setup, we only have one box for the gw and the dialin server with one public 
ip.

we use US robotics and diamond supra express, but of course any external modem 
will do.
