hello all,

I'm going to set up a secondary SMB server (primary web, email, DNS
server) at a client. I'd like to have RAID-1. To keep price down, I'll
be using IDE drives. I don't expect there to be a lot of pressure on the
drives, so I don't need extreme performance. They already have a
RAID-1 NT server (historical, if the Linux SMB server works well, we
may drop the NT server) as their primary server.

Is Software Raid good enough? How much difference does a hardware
RAID card make if all I need is RAID-1? If I should go with hardware
RAID, which IDE RAID cards do people recommend? I saw ian's
recommendations a few weeks ago. I'll go on the archive to see what
that was. But apart from ian's recommendation, are there others?

For those who suggest software RAID, are there special tips? i know
about the howtos, but i've never actually done this yet, so tips on
things to watch out for, timesinks, etc, would be appreciated.

thanks for any pointers.
