Actually I would recommend buying a new LAN card worth < 500 pesos 10/100 mbps at PC Option :) I can recommend you for discount. I bought my LAN cards from there which are linux compatible for only P450 And it's brand new.
If you have WI-FI laptop enabled ... I would recommend linksys 4 port broadband router it's cool . that is what I'm using here a the house.. I have 4 desktops and two WI-FI laptop. My network here at home is pretty much unique I have one broadband/wireless router, 8 port switch, 4 desktop (2 XP,1 win2k, 1 lindows) and at my mini office I have a HP linux server (web,mail,2 port dial-in) :) The first time I didn't have my router.. I installed rp-pppoe to work For my 256 DSL connection. For the Linksys broadband router... I don't recommend buying it locally if you know someone in US that is going home this holiday.. buy it there it will only costs you 5-6K at most and they're on sale.. here the sell it locally for 13-16K And that too expensive for a home network. I got my router in states for 7K Last September. I would not recommend any coax technology, If you can buy 10/100... why not? And also you can ask the store to crimp a cross cable for you (two PC only) If you will be connecting two or more PC get cheap 4 port hub/switch and also if you have a laptop - and you want to interconnect ... better not to use coax... it make sense .. right ? haven't seen any COAX interface on laptops though ! if there is.. UNIQUE yun! At PC Express mandaluyong they do that for you. www.pcx.com.ph for your reference this will help you decide on the costing ... of course PC Option is much cheaper by 50 pesos at least. ---ran -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] On Behalf Of Pablo Manalastas Sent: Friday, December 20, 2002 2:53 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [plug] first home network!!! If you are lucky, you may still be able to find the "combo" cards from second hand shops like HMR in Mandaluyong. The combo cards have both twisted pair socket and coax connector. If you use the twisted pair socket, you can use "cross-over wiring" (have some technician crimp this for you). The normal straight through wiring won't work. Also you can only connect the two existing machines that you have and can not add any more machines to your network. If you use the coax connectors, you have to terminate the coax cables on the two ends with 50 ohm resistors. But with this, you can wire any number of machines to your network, up to a total length of 100 meters (?) of coax cable. In both cases, you do not need a hub. If you can not get these old combo cards, you can always buy the new network cards (one per machine), and then you need a hub. An eight-port hub today costs so little, you won't notice the expense.
