hello all,

i asked the following question long ago. there was no reply.
the problem persists and so i try again with a bit more detail.

click and drag works when i've just logged into X (see below
for how i tested). if i do an apm -s and then restore the
saved state, click and drag no longer works.

1. normally, click and drag in X works correctly. when i do
that, the block of text i clicked and dragged over is
    highlighted.

2. to test this:
    A. open a browser (i use opera).
    B. open any URL (i use: http://localhost/phpman/ that gives
me the php manual page table of contents (local copy).
    C. bring mouse to any text. left click, and drag downward.
release left mouse button. the text should be highlighted
(unless you've got some weird gestures setup, or weird
xmodmap settings that affect click and drag).

3. so #1 and #2 above, done consecutively, demonstrate that
click and drag works. next, do an apm -s. this may not
work if you don't have apm support in your kernel or
(unlikely), your box does not support apm.

4. recover from apm (on my notebook, i press the power on key
    once).

5. do the #2 test again.

6. when in evolution, and after the apm, i also have other strange
behavior. e.g., if i'm replying to a message, doing:
Shift-cursor key or even just Shift greater-than (to get the
greater-than sign, since it's the shifted period), will bring
the focus to the To line (this is completely weird since i
was just editing in the message editing thing.

on the other hand, #6 is not consistent. sometimes i get that
behavior and sometimes i don't (just tested now, for instance,
i didn't get the behavior).

click and drag doesn't work for scrollbars either (tested with the
evolution scrollbar for this email message). it's kind of weird
since the scrollbar will seem to work. clicking on the thumb and
moving the mouse downward will have no effect on the thumb. but
releasing the mouse button when the mouse is below (not on) the
thumb will make the thumb jump downward. apparently the release
is seen as a separate click so the thumb jumps. in real click and
drag, of course, the thumb follows the mouse smoothly.

since no one answered last time, perhaps it's something people haven't
run across and solved. in that case, i'd appreciate some data points.
if you test this, could you email me (directly, if there is enough
data, i will summarize to the list) with your results and machine
specifications. e.g., i'm using a Dell Latitude something or other,
it's a 300Mhz box.

to solve the problem, i need to kill X. it's not necessary to reboot,
just kill X and log in again. i hate doing that since it takes a
while for KDE to start.

i use some xmodmap settings. they don't seem relevant though. i
did an xmodmap -pke before and after the apm -s and then compared
the output. there is no change.

hmmm, i'll test in icewm and maybe in gnome to see if it happens
there too.
