Pretty certain.  Interbase, back in the early 90s
was actually marketed as an embedded database (because
that was where the hype was at that time).  Borland should
have emphasised the fact that it also made for a pretty 
nifty server database!

Unlike Polyhedra though, Interbase/Firebird is by
no means an in-memory RDMS.  If you're looking for
other free alternatives, check out Gadfly and Equi4's
Metakit.

Wrt to free Firebird ODBC drivers, check out the 
sourceforge.firebird-odbc-devel newsgroup at news.atkin.com
(and tell me what you learn :-).  Free JDBC support is there 
in the form of Interclient.  There are many commercial 
Interbase ODBC drivers and these should work with Firebird
which is basically a debugged Interbase 6.0 with some
'minor' enhancements.
