The ElTorito boot system that is used in iso9660 CDs requires the image
of a bootable 1.44MB or 2.88MD disk. Even if your boot kernel and root
filesystem are both compressed you still can not fit more than two boot kernels
and one root filesystem (compressed) in a 2.88MB syslinux boot disk.
Syslinux is nice, since it allows you to specify in syslinux.cfg several
alternative boot images. You can also use lilo, but when you change the
boot kernel, you have to rerun lilo on the bootable disk image, and this can be
quite a hassle when you change your mind often.
