By "reinventing" i meant reinventing the service that redhat already does - the R&D it pours into make the distribution, and the resources it invests in order to MAINTAIN the distribution, and SUPPORT it worldwide. This kind of reinvention is pointless, wastes money and resources. Why do it all over again when you can leverage on what is already offered for free? And no - it doesn't say much to create a distribution and just leave it out to pasture. It just says how unprofessional you are to those who adopted your distribution if you will not spend a cent on maintenance and support for it. It's not simply a question of "Am i capable of creating MY OWN LINUX DISTRIBUTION" It's also a question of "DO I HAVE THE RESOURCES TO SUPPORT AND MAINTAIN IT FOR A CONSIDERABLE AMOUNT OF TIME", and "Am i willing to do that all over again when others are already doing it free of charge?" > > I wouldn't have responded to your e-mail if you didn't drag the > patriotism thing... > Oh please spare me the patriotism hogwash! Let's not color what is a purely technical and economic issue with shades of red white and blue. Be logical and practical. Make use of what exists, in a way which will benefit you the most. Don't redo existing efforts simply because you need to feel that your 'race' or 'nationality' is capable of doing it. Everyone is a user of technology (even Redhat) and it's not degrading to admit that you do. And don't get me started on this patriotism crap. Dido once had a cool tagline which i will dig up for just this purpose: "Patriotism...is nothing else but a means for obtaining for the rulers their ambitions and covetous desires, and for the ruled the abdication of human dignity, reason, and conscience, and a slavish enthralment to those in power." We live in one planet, and this technology we are using (linux and open source) is technology developed and cooperated upon by a multitude of people from different nations, not just one. There is no room for selfish nationalism here. ASTI made the best decision by leveraging their solution on this kind of technology, and building on it. -- Philippine Linux Users' Group (PLUG) Mailing List [EMAIL PROTECTED] (#PLUG @ irc.free.net.ph) Official Website: http://plug.linux.org.ph Searchable Archives: http://marc.free.net.ph .
