I'm using AIT-1 with a Sony SDX-400. The tapes hold 35GB uncompressed
and cost around US$45 each. I average over 2.5x compression over all my
data using "gzip -9". A tape for me easily holds all that I need for
many weeks.

The tapes are extremely fast, they can seek to any particular file in 30
seconds or so.

I don't know if any other companies make tapes, but I'm not concerned
since they are just a little over $1/GB.

Altogether, it seemed to be the cheapest solution for my backups.
