As this is a newbie mailing list, might I suggest that you suggest
some useful Google queries? Remember, we were all newbies once, and
it's rather hard to use Google if you don't know what to look for. =)
Be nice to other newbies - provide tips on good search queries and
resources, and help them figure out what they need.
Just a friendly netiquette reminder. =)

Okay, back to our regularly scheduled Linux help.
(Hi! I used to BBS too. <grin> )
It looks like you're trying to set up an Internet gateway that connects
through dial-up. I haven't set one of those up myself, but here are some
guides that you might find useful.
- On many distributions, you can set up your pppd connection to go up
automatically when the computer is booted. See if your distribution
has a network interface configuration wizard (linuxconf? drakconf?
netconfig? netcfg? edit /etc/network/interfaces?), and set up your
ppp0 interface.
- You can set your gateway to dial on demand. For more information, see
Diald-HOWTO

iptables can filter based on source IP addresses, but if you want
user-level control, you might be interested in PPPoE (PPP over
Ethernet). This will allow you to control and track Internet usage on
a per-user basis.
Hope this helped! Feel free to ask more questions. <smile>
