The crypt() function that converts a plaintext password to encrypted password prior to installation of the encrypted password in either /etc/passwd or /etc/shadow, is not invertible. That is, given an encrypted password there is no way of getting the plain text password. Of course you can use a program like "crack" that tries thousands of dictionary words, common names, birthdays, etc., encrypts these using the crypt() function and compares the encrypted result with the one from /etc/shadow. Sometimes you get lucky and guess the password this way. But that is not really "inverting". If you forgot your password, there is no way of "recovering" it. Just tell your system administrator, who can create a new password for you, and then tell you what this new password is.
