[plug] hardware pppoe

we just upgraded our adsl modem to a zyxel prestige 642me-11. it comes with 
a built-in pppoe and is connected to eth0. i get to connect the server 
(mandrake 8) to the internet without any problems but i can't ping the 
internal network... here's the setup

modem's ip - 192.168.1.1/255.255.255.248
server eth0 - 192.168.1.2/255.255.255.0
server eth1 (to the LAN) - 192.168.1.3/255.255.255.0
when i change the modem's subnet 255.255.255.0, i can't do any browsing on 
the server. i only get to ping the internal network when I change eth0 to 
eth1 and vice versa, but again i loose browsing capabilities. what could be 
wrong?
