It is actually the fault of the teachers! You see, not that many teachers are
familiar with Linux or other Open Source applications for that matter.

AS PLUG, we should do something to remedy this. I propose a newsletter
that we can use to distribute to students, offices, etc. - in softcopy (PDF) to
lessen the cost. What do you think? We need someone who will act as editor,
another who will do the layout, etc. Coming up with the second issue (easy to
come up with the first) is the difficult part but I know that we can do this. Our
website
is not enough, nor is our mailing list.

A portal, such as os.up.edu.ph, where students contribute open source related
news from other sites, can help, too.

UnPLUG (University of the Philippines Linux Users Group) is doing its share
by conducting talks, seminars and trainings to their fellow students. I hope that
there are similar initiatives in all colleges and universities in the country.

UP is also promoting Open Source in government along with DOST/DOST-ASTI. Still,
we need more.

Subject: [plug] [OT] Is Linus known to college students?
In the Computer Quiz Bee held at the University of Perpetual Help
at Las Pi~nas yesterday, the question "Who is the principal author
of the Linux operating system?" was asked. Of the 12 competing teams,
only four teams got the right answer, Linus Torvalds.

The most Linux-literate in our society should be our college
students, but they are not. Maybe this is the fault of our
school system that encourages the use the most commonly available
and piratable OS: Windows. Maybe it is our fault in PLUG.
Maybe it is nobody's fault. ...
