Since you were able to view http://example.com, you got the Tomcat http server to run. How did you configure your apache httpd.conf?

i just installed something like that using debian3or2, apache13(pkg),
tomcat 5.0.18(bin), mod_jk2(src), j2sdk1.4.2_03 but havent tried apache2
though.
