You won't be able to access these files at all if you happen to be
disconnected from your home network, and I think you don't want that.
NFS doesn't make local copies and resynchronize them on reconnection.
The Coda file system is supposed to be able to do this, but it's not
quite stable yet.  What I use for this purpose is rsync.

Ask if your ISP has an IMAP server.  That will ease synchronizing the
two machines.  You can still use rsync to synchronize the two machines'
copies of mailboxes as well if your ISP doesn't have an IMAP server.
