Openwebmail may not be the way to go. I don't have time to reinstall perl right now. Have you heard Imp webmail from the Horde project?
http://www.horde.org/imp/  Someone suggested it as a good alternative :)

hello jopoy. you need to recompile perl with suid support. it is
recommended. however, if you do not wish to recompile your perl with
suid support, you may wish to use C wrappers for all suid scripts, which
you know are not recommended coz some openwebmail suid scripts may not
work, along with *some dependencies. openwebmail highly suggests an
installation with suidperl support. but, hey check out their website for
new changes.
