I finally got around to installing FC2 on my circa-2001 machine. Amazingly, nearly everything works: it even detected and installed a driver for my ancient-and-exotic AU8830 sound card (sound doesn't work though..)
The most visible changes for me are: 1) 2.6 kernel 2) GNOME 2.6 (with a much improved file chooser!) 3) system-config-* instead of redhat-config-* 4) X.org xserver instead of XFree86 5) GIMP 2.0 6) better Nautilus with built-in font and CD burner functionality i downloaded the latest NVIDIA drivers, and they installed without a hitch (on the stock RedHat kernel; i'm getting too lazy to upgrade the kernel anymore). stability- and responsiveness-wise, it still feels the same as before (RH9 + kernel 2.4.24). maybe when i load the machine heavily. i haven't tested the Nautilus CD burner functionality yet, i'm a cdrecord kind of guy.. but overall it looks really great. they've also suppressed the kernel messages on loading so it looks like XP. :) boots a lot slower than XP though.. :O --- Orlando Andico <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Mosaic Communications, Inc. -- Philippine Linux Users' Group (PLUG) Mailing List [EMAIL PROTECTED] (#PLUG @ irc.free.net.ph) Official Website: http://plug.linux.org.ph Searchable Archives: http://marc.free.net.ph .
