Ebay has cheap ultra 5/10. Though I have some
contact suppliers that can beat ebay prices by
less than 30%.

yes, and what I really love are the built-in
serial consoles. If a box dies or would not boot
up, i can still fix the box even if at home or
even half a world way without being physically
be in the datacenter.

What's interesting is that SUN has brought that
capability to the X86 market via a new product
entry line called SunFire V20z. It's based on
the AMD64 opteron and is certified to run SuSE
Linux Enterprise Server 8 AMD64 and Red Hat
Enterprise Linux 3 AMD64.

It has a BIOS which has remote control features
like OBP. It also has a trimmed down Service
processor hardware PowerPC running on trimmed
down linux embedded server with SSL support and
a dedicated 10/100mbps ethernet for remote
control server operations.

Another interesting note is that SUN will have a
specific Solaris for the AMD opterons. So, there
will be now three Solaris distros:

Solaris X86 (32bit)
Solaris SPARC (64bit)
Solaris AMD64 (64bit)

Yes it's crude, but for me, all the basic/medium
package management needs are met.

It can be helped though if you use pkg-get from
http://www.blastwave.org. In the main web page,
the inspiration was Debian.

Not the pkg-get from sunfreeware. Hate it since
it installs in /usr/local and can sometimes
interfere with locally compiled packages which
is also in /usr/local. Not to mention some
b0rken packages from sunfreeware!

blastwave is really good and if you install a
package, it will also get necessary dependencies
ala debian. now, all the utilities and programs
that i like in linux, i can also use it solaris
with minimum effort. For perspective, I can
install apache mod SSL and will be up and
running and can access the URL in less than 5
minutes. damn, i have not even touched the
configuration files to suite my taste yet!
