AFAIK cAos is not a clone but another implementation. CentOS is RHEL 2.1 & 3 AS/ES clone.
CentOS 2.x is more stable but the packages are old (like RHEL 2.1). CentOS 3.x provides better hardware support and have newer (in terms of version) packages. And compared to Fedora Core series, CentOS is much much better for production servers. Another advantage of CentOS is they provide updated ISOs like RHEL updates.
