You can use MythTV. Yes, it's primarily used as a PVR software but you can also use it to make a stand alone, multi-purpose player. http://mythtv.org If you also want to use that machine as a PVR, that machine that you have there doesn't have enough power to do almost real-time encoding. You might need to purchase one of those Haupage PVR-250 or PVR-350 cards. They have hardware MPEG2 encoders.
