Im not sure if this is still true.. but i think the 
problem with round robin dns is "dns-caching".. you 
probably wont get the round-robin effect since dns
queries may be cached? 

Some loadbalancers that i know and have seen in action
are Pen,pound, and smartpeer. I was able to go into
the
details of differences in terms of
performance/features
etc. 

Also, i think you can achieved a high-available server
by setting up a LVS? this is in the linux 2.6.x kernel

it is also worth considering the other features of the
available load balancers such as health monitoring of 
the http servers so that when 1 http server crashed
the
load balancer will be smart enough not to direct
connections to it.
