Uhm, waitaminute, how much is Ubuntu charging for several dozen CDs, then
customs "charging" for their release? Not to mention the aggravation of the
latter. I bet if you added the cost of a CD-R and the cost of shipping a
single CD, that'd be cheaper, after maybe the 10th burn, than an order of
10 from Ubuntu.

Speaking of customs, you gotta understand that *any* item shipped in
quantity will look like a commercial importation. For the customs
inspectors, the "free beer" side of Ubuntu is irrelevant. Earlier posts in
this thread have mentioned that. Besides, careful about wishing for
"flexibility" in the handling of large quantities of, e.g., Ubuntu CDs. I
betcha importers would jump at any flexibility that customs displays.

As to shelling out money for blank disks, you don't have to do that -- you
can ask those who'd like a copy to provide their own. Isn't that what PLUG
and other LUGs do at cookfests?

I know that the FreeBSD project requests you to order a CD from them,
because they make a small amount of money from CD sales. That's really the
only reason I can think of for ordering free software CDs in quantity. But
then I *would* like to hear other reasons.

Mabuhay.

You're right. But why should you waste money for a cdr and effort to
burn when there's a free, nicely packed Ubuntu out there, just waiting
to be shipped right to your doorstep?

In my case, I'd like to distribute these Ubuntu CDs to students where
PLUG are giving free Linux seminars since 2003. We don't have that much
money to shell out for blank cdr. Unfortunately our Bureau of Customs
doesn't have flexible policy for these charitable works :(
