I agree. Item #1 should be the primary reason for carrying the LR #.
Personally, it's been with my signature in every email I send. I've got
lots of unknowing friends who ask me: What's with your signature?
What's Linux?

I believe that while there may be a few Linux users who just want to be "in", 
Linux Users on the whole are committed to free/open source software. Even if 
these few people use Linux just to keep up, it is the responsibility of the 
more serious ones to help them transform into real FOSS practitioners and 
advocates.
