FWIW, I've already downloaded Linux Device Drivers, 3rd ed. (PDF), and it is quite informative. However, nothing beats talking to someone who's already been there and done that :D
Does the 3rd ed cover the 2.6.x kernel? Is it open content licensed? Is it an easy read?
I don't know if there's still a guide from TLDP which deals with Linux Kernel Hacking, but I remember reading it a couple of years back. It might help, but I wasn't brave enough to start hacking at the kernel anyway -- needed more kung fu to understand the coding conventions and functional structure of the kernel.
Btw, good luck! :)
