I am using an ECS G551 laptop with Ubuntu 5.04 and the only thing that
didn't work was the winmodem (which is understandable). 3D Acceleration,
wlan via Ndiswrapper, hotkeys and laptop keys all work nicely.
Cheers!

What's the winmodem's chipset on the ECS Desknote? The chipsets I know that can run on Linux (i.e. have kernel modules that do work on recent kernels) are the Lucent, Intel HAM, and SoftLink (?). Of course, this is off the top of my head.
If it's a Motorola, you're out of luck. ;) (I am blessed to have such a chipset. Hooray for me.) You'll have to run a 2.4.x kernel and it has to be built on GCC 2.9x and not 3, because the binary-only module distributed by Motorola only runs on 2.4.x and was compiled with GCC 2.9x
