Having tried it out for a few hours, I feel personally driven to make a few comments. I had previously worked on GIMP 1.x.
Note: I eveluated the Windows version since I wanted to compare it to Photoshop:

1. Good interface - finally! Ok it's not photoshop yet but in a way the lack of clutter is refreshing.
2. Command organization - I really wish the image adjustment dialogues weren't in the Layers menu but in the Image menu like in photoshop. Either way makes sense but I spent a good number of minuts looking for the Curves dialogue. It's just something to bear in mind I guess.
3. No CMYK - Oh , oh! The best you get is a CMYK dcpomposition from RGB. And you can't save the decomposed file as a combined tif. You can also use a CMYK color picker  but you still work in RGB space. The lack of CMYK editing and saving will prevent this from being taken seriously by color printing professionals.
4. No color management - None, nada... You cannot even define which RGB Color space you wish t work in.
5. Layers/Channels/History - YES! It's about time GIMP gave us a good interface for this.
6. Memory -- GIMP is a bit of a memory hog. On my laptop, without an image file loaded, Photoshop uses 15MB of RAM while GIMP 2.2 uses 19MB. Photoshop wins...
7. Tools - The tools box is much improved but still takes up too much screen space. On the other hand, unlike Photoshop you can actually close this box and work off the menu bar.

Overall -- I must say that GIMP has certainly grown-up. For a free tool, it's pretty awesome in its ability to deliver professional image editing tools. But until color management and CMYK editing is implemented, this will appeal only to Linux based web designers.
