Perhaps. But how do I get rid of it?

BTW, this "window" doesn't have normal window controls. It sits just under the menu line in MATE, extends across the boundary from the left hand monitor to partway into the right hand monitor (about the same width as the right hand monitor).

I'm typing along and mistype something. A window opens with a command
prompt. I'm not sure what opened it (UbuntuMATE 16.04), but it might have
been <ctrl><alt>F1. <ctrl>D doesn't close it. exit doesn't close it. I
assume it's owned by some process, but I don't know what to call it to
search for it in the output of ps ax.

A clue stick will be appreciated.

Thanks.
