Still can't scan from any machine, Ubuntu or Slackware (XFCE), but I did get printing working from Slackware, both laptop and desktop machines. On each machine, I clicked on Applications > Settings > Print Settings, told it to look for a network printer. It found my HP M148dw, and happily installed it. I also printed a test page from each machine.
