Many (most?) digital cameras include an "orientation" tag in the
collection of EXIF metadata embedded in the image file. The tag value
indicates which way the camera was rotated during exposure (and hence
which direction the resulting image should be rotated in order to look
correct). For example:
$ exiftool dsc_6354.nef | grep -i orient
Orientation : Rotate 90 CW
