I suspected that. I'm overtired after trying to keep the hours I did a half-century ago ;/

You could certainly run a script at boottime that would determine which system 
was booting and then make a symlink to the correct /home

That give me an idea. Always boot with PartitionA in fstab.
If I wish to use PartitionB do something like
  switch to root
  unmount PartitionA
  mount PartitionB
  switch back to user richard


You could merge the /home into a single one and symlink all the systems to use 
the common /home
Will suffer clash of file names.
