Getting closer. ip route add 192.168.1.0/24 dev eth0 adds the route; confirmed by 'ip r', but now instead of 'network is unreachable' when I ping 192.168.1.1 ping starts, but doesn't receive acknowledgement for transmitted packets. The route command is still missing something and I'm not seeing that missing piece on ip web pages.
