You mentioned Total Commander before, and I immediately installed it.
Later I uninstalled it when I discovered that it could not copy/move
files to the internal directories of Android. At the time I had some
MP3 files on a USB drive that were visible on the phone. I selected
them and clicked on 'Copy' at the bottom of the window. Then I
navigated to the Music folder inside Android, where there was a Paste
button, but it was grayed out.

Later I discovered a couple other file managers that had the same
problem. So I asked on an Android forum and was told to use Samsung
File Manager. It worked, and I never looked back.

However, now that you have mentioned its sftp plugin perhaps I should
give it a second look. This morning I read Galen's suggestion of
AirDroid, and I started to install it, but aborted the installation
when it insisted that I give it a valid, verified e-mail address and
agree to let it send me 'important notifications.' I know what that
means. And after that experience I found other similar utilities that
weren't as annoying, and I installed one. On my laptop I have a couple
FTP tools that I have used in the past to transfer files to PSU, but it
wasn't immediately obvious to me how to use them with the phone tool.

At the moment my motivation has dropped because I found a different
solution. I took one of my EXFAT drives and reformatted it to FAT32.
The I copied 60GB of files to it from my laptop, and when I put it in
the phone all the files were immediately visible and no problem moving
them around. I'm not wild about FAT32, but it got the job done.

I still think there is something screwy with EXFAT or the way I'm using
it. Maybe I'll give it another go a year from now.
