Right. I think DNS has a built-in assumption that domain owners also manage their own IP space, which is mostly untrue for personal domains.

If you want to do your own email server, on Linode for example, you will go
to your DNS provider and set Linode's DNS server as your domain DNS or just
email DNS. Then create your zone + reverse record on Linode's DNS server.

I'm willing to pay for an always-on VM, which may be an unnecessary expense for someone else, but Digital Ocean created the reverse pointers for my VM when I spun it up. I didn't need to change my DNS zone provider at all. I've used Zoneedit's free DNS service for years now; it's always been solid for me:
