Still clueless on the source of the problem. However, aplay -L shows all available audio cards, sound-test produces its default sound, and mplayer produces output from the podcast .mp3 I downloaded to the speakers and the Yamaha headset (which is much clearer than the speakers, Ed). Rumor has it that Slackware-15.0 will be released Real Soon Now. In the meantime the default version of audacity is 2.3.2; I don't know if I can upgrade it on this host. Sigh, Rich
