Rich,
I did a bit of experimentation. If I change settings then reboot my
machine, brave does not shut down properly and my settings do not get
restored the next time I open Brave.
If I change settings, then close the tab (or Brave), THEN reboot, my
settings are still set properly when I open Brave.

I think the settings don't get saved until the tabs (or Brave) are closed
properly. When Brave is not explicitly closed before shutting down, then
the settings get lost.

My recommendation is to configure your DDG settings to the way you want
them, then close the tab. Now your settings will be saved and will be the
new 'default' when you search with DDG.

A better, but slightly more difficult solution (for which I am not able to
give more detailed assistance since I have never used xfce) is to add the
following to xfce's shutdown process.

> /usr/bin/pkill --oldest --signal TERM -f brave

This will gracefully kill brave and you will no longer get the "Brave
didn't shut down correctly" message.
