I used to use Rosegarden for writing/playing scores. Like any of these applications, it need some sort of midi sw/hw to render the sounds.
I found it much easier to enter scores using keyboard/mouse rather than by midi keyboard. This is because midi input captures precise note length/tempo - requiring significant clean up. Like anything else, it needs time investment to acquire profficiency.
