I posted this once before on sllug a month or so ago, but those that
showed interest never panned out. I apologize if you are on the sllug
and have to re-read this. I have added a few more details to the
original post, however.

The company I work for is retiring an older RS/6000 which was purchased
in 1999. These are its general specs:

IBM RS/6000 7017-S7A
Quad 262 MHz Power3
4 GB SDRAM
6228 Fiber Channel Card
SSA Disk Array

Total disk storage:
  1 52.1GB disk
  6 8.6GB disks
 48 4.3GB disks
     -----
     310GB total

There are two pieces, the s7a itself, and the SSA array. Their
dimensions (in inches) are 22.30 (W) 40.90 (D) 62.00 (H)

The s7a weighs about 800 pounds. The disk array probably ways more.

It's got AIX 5.3 installed, but you can stick Linux on there if you
want. All of the SSA drives are zeroed, and only the base AIX install
is left.

I'd say the base (s7a) unit itself (without the ssa array) is worth
about $1K. At least that's what Google tells me. We recently bought
the 6228 FC card for it to get it to talk to a netapp, and that card
cost way more than that, and it's included. The SSA disk array is
probably worth more than the s7a itself.

Our situation is that the colocation facility charges us about $1,500
per month to rent the space that it is sitting on, but in asset
management's point of view its upkeep is more costly than its value.
The CIO wants me to hire a moving company and get them to dispose of it,
but I keep holding out because there's got to be an IBM enthusiast,
student, NPO or someone who might want it. It runs fine, but you'll
have no warranty or support from us after taking it. You could probably
purchase IBM support if you needed to. We need to get rid of it as soon
as possible. Next week (Monday the 21st) I'll start looking into simply
disposing of it if none of you have come to get it.

The only catches for you:
  It's big.
  It takes 240V power.
You need to come and get it.

We're willing to give it to anyone who wants it, you just need to come
get it at ELI's colocation center in Ogden. It is located at the
"Commerce" building at this address:

http://local.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=1080+country+hills+drive,+ogden,+utah&t=h&om=1

If you want it and are willing to come get it:

You'll need a few people to help load it into a truck, as it's heavy and
big. If I do get any replies, it'll be first-pick-up, first serve --
the first guy that can pick it up can have it.

You might also want to bring a notebook to be able to take note about
how the SSA array is connected up so you can get it going in its new
home. I'm not going to be able to give you support in getting it
working.

ELI took the wheels off the s7a itself and installed big brackets that
bolt it to the floor instead. They also lost the wheels. To move it,
you may need a hand truck. However, The SSA disk array (which is
heavier) can still roll.

If you're interested and can come and get it sometime between now
through Saturday, please contact me. If I can't get rid of it by then,
I'll just ship it to the dump.

Thanks.
