What crazy scenario is causing you to pound your system so hard? I
mean, really, cat /dev/zero is not an "in the wild" type of program,
nor one that you are likely to run in a production environment,
unless you have untrusted customers on the box, in which case you
will never be able to guarantee that their dumb actions don't cause
you issues.
Bzzzzt. If I didn't have a real-world scenario, I wouldn't be asking
the question. cat /dev/zero does a great job of approximating what is
happening in production. We move lots of data, and we have big disks.
If you want to know more, send me your resume. :)
P.S. Sorry for the sarcastic tone. That "Bzzzzt" wasn't necessary. But
we really are moving big amounts of data to disk on the same box hosting
MySQL (not ideal, but that's the way it is for now, though not for long).
