I've wanted to start a GeekTelCo for a long time. Just a PSTN gateway. Bring your own server (at your home), features and frills. Everyone would know how over subscribed the lines are and be able to watch the load etc. They could lower their cost by choosing to bring on additional users and sharing expenses. No restrictions on configurations or devices. The only support you get is a mailing list - full of smart users who have and interest in you getting it right. You can get a T1 with 23 channels for under $20 a month per channel and oversubscribe it 2:1 without any trouble (I'm guessing). That brings the cost down to <$10 for a line. You could easily allow people to have two and three channels going at the same time *if* they didn't try to run a business off of it. Also, the packets would NOT be bouncing all over the US before terminating, it would be a nice local pipe. Anyway, I know it doesn't answer your question, but it sounds fun. BTW, this is where I'm getting my service: https://teliax.com/plans Gabe /* PLUG: http://plug.org, #utah on irc.freenode.net Unsubscribe: http://plug.org/mailman/options/plug Don't fear the penguin. */
