I'd say MySQL has its market share because curious people could
double-click on "setup.exe" and have a database.  PostgreSQL only
recently added support for Windows.  Back when MySQL was gaining all
of its momentum, the vast majority of developers were still running
Windows desktops.  If you wanted to play with Postgres, you had to
first install Linux (SCARY!!) before you could even try out the
database.

Thus more developers cozied up to MySQL, pushed said technology to
companies/employers, and now we have cats and dogs living together...
mass hysteria.
