I personally think you will save a lot of money and laptop battery time (depending on the solution) by getting a large USB pen drive, or next best option is a small laptop drive with a usb powered case.

The remote power idea is nice, but will cost as much or more than adding another drive powered by the laptop + spare laptop battery.

Anyone know of a good PORTABLE AC power source? Something like a UPS or
something, but smaller. It doesn't have to be big, just enough to power
a couple of external devices to my laptop.

Have power anytime or anywhere with the GoBe Power Hub Battery and
Solar Briefcase. The Power Hub is very versatile and can be charged in
3 different ways and also can power a variety of items with its 3
output plugs. Great for use in the outdoors or in an emergency when
power is needed most.

Powers electronic appliances and devices requiring 80 watts or less
with the standard electrical outlet. You can also use the USB, DC
ourput(DC adapter included) ports.
Fully charged battery holds approximately 150 Watt hours
