Figured I'd start a new thread & hopefully not a flamewar. So here's the deal. Someone mentioned Slicehost was having Issues today. My experience with Slicehost has been fantastic and they use AWS. >From a webhosting standpoint I agree Slicehost in general has been great. But I am curious to know the experiences of other PLUGgers in regards to App Engine.
I've used App Engine personally and found it to be far superior for some things & completely lacking in others. For example, the APIs (i.e. what you can do with it) are very restricted. However I have built a monitoring product on top of it and if you're a good Java or Python engineer, it does provide a very compelling experience. I've also used AWS and found it to be more traditional, i.e. you provision a server, install your apps & run. So for someone looking for a cheap webhosting solution for a traditional website, AWS can't really be beat. If your usage stays in the free tier, you can even get the equivalent of a dedicated server for free. Anyways, just wanted to gather some thoughts together & see what others have experienced with App Engine or AWS.
