Believe it or not Radio Shack does sell the serial cable you are asking about. I nearly died of shock when I found out the store in Orem on South State Street across from University Mall actually keeps them in stock. In fact I have a brand new one sitting here I'm no longer using that I bought to program a PIC a few weeks back. Cost me $12.99 IIRC A USB to serial cable is about $19 there.
There is also Central Utah Electronic Supply in Provo and they have tons of great stuff if you are in Utah County, if I can't find it at Radio Shack (I live like next door to RS), I've been in the habit of going to CUE lately. http://goo.gl/5CTGi RA-Elco in SLC if you are up that way is another good place to look. http://goo.gl/66RsY Unlike most of the other places around if you have a clue what you need, these places can either find it and order, show you how to make it yourself, or make it there for you (one time ra-elco actually made an impossible to find cable for me themselves, you just have to ask.) However those are electronic supply houses, and don't typically have anything resembling modern computer equipment. In fact CUE has a dinosaur for sale inside one of their counters, I think it's a Commodore PET. I remember AROMA, sadly they bit the dust several years ago. I'm pretty sure the other recommend of PC Discounters is also long gone now, their Orem store has been shuttered for a few years anyways. Unlike most of the list I have a real bad taste in my mouth for JPL, formerly MAS formerly Computer Recyclers. I haven't tried them in several years but last time I did business with them I got burned for several thousand dollars after they accepted some equipment for trade in credit and then when I went to actually use the credit they had "lost it". I wouldn't touch that place with a 10ft pole. They keep changing names because they keep giving themselves a bad name. For most computer equipment NewEgg is your best bet, but I've found some smoking deals on Craigslist too. You just have to search, locally I can't personally recommend any place anymore.
