Plug, The HDD in the laptop of my brother failed and he does not have a complete backup of the data (all too common, sadly). It will not even initialize so I cannot attempt recovery via software. It is apparently a hardware failure. It does power on and reaches a clicking pattern. I was about to open it up and attempt to coax it into a passable state. Before I do that, I decided to check out data recovery prices and option. Apparently Google indicates that we have several places fairly locally that do data recovery. One place even says recovery can start at $99. Good marketing. In the past I have shied away from the option because it is traditionally extremely expensive. However, I know technologies have improved so maybe costs are more reasonable.
Anyway, I am wondering if anyone has any good experiences with local recovery companies, which you would recommend, and what kind of cost my brother might be looking at.
