stream to a local network?

All I do is install my media player of choice on the "remote" machine, keep
music files on a central computer, create a network share on central
computer that shares said music files, connect to shared music folder from
remote machine, play said music files in said media player.

I don't see a need to go through the brain damage of setting up some
"server" to stream music locally... of course this solution doesn't work
for mobile devices like i-devices or android or whatever other flavor you
use.

We just use Pandora or XM or one of the other 100 streaming music apps if
we want to stream to a tablet or phone. Of course this means you have to
maintain more than one "playlist" which I do anyway, because my music
tastes change depending on my mood.

I found that it was extremely difficult to find a "media server" that
didn't use flash or some other tech that isn't avail on tablets/phones.
