I'm actually doing a presentation on doing this kind of stuff with tools in
Linux for the October PLUG meeting.

Try avidemux (has builds for Gtk and Qt) to do what you want. It has filters
for all of those things. 

The non-linear editor I use -- kdenlive -- will also do all those things.
