You've got lots of options. Asterisk could do what you're asking, but with a lot more maintenance. And you'd still need a voip carrier to provide you with numbers and termination. So while I never say no to Asterisk, recognize it would be a lot of time to set it up.
I would steer you to try out Hangouts or Skype, something like that. For example with Hangouts you could do voice or video chat internally. You can create ad-hoc or scheduled conferences, with the option of adding phone participants. If you want people to be able to dial in, add an Uber Conference. And Google Voice can provide you with a phone number that can forward to your cell, or use the Hangouts mobile app. The tradeoff is selling your soul to Google. There are also loads of hosted PBX providers out there. Loads and loads. You can typically pay between $5 and $50/month per line for that, depending on what features you get. A service I use and recommend is Avoxi.
