Diabetes is "a disease in which the bodyâs ability to produce or respond to the hormone insulin is impaired" and while there is still no cure, there are treatments involving measuring the levels of sugar in the blood, in food consumed, and manually administering insulin according to predetermined formulas. The life of a responsible diabetic becomes a continuous and ongoing math story problem. This presentation will give people a quick introduction to diabetes and information about how open source software and hardware is making it easier than ever to manage the condition. Doran Barton is a Type-1 Diabetic and has been using Linux since the mid 1990s. He is a vocal open source advocate and has been involved with multiple conferences, user groups, and online communities. He is currently employed at Bluehost as a software developer. Just go in the front doors, and follow the signs. We're usually in a conference in the back of the main floor. http://plug.org/uvu has directions and a map
