SC and LC connectors don't have anything to do with the signal. They are
just different connector types, and both are used with single mode and
multi mode fiber. APC (with SC or LC) connectors have angled ends to reduce
the reflection of light causing signal degradation or interference. You
don't want to connect an APC end with anything other than APC because they
won't seat well and you'll get very bad signal if anything at all. Most
other connector types are either specialized or legacy.

The diameter of the fiber however, is designed to carry different
wavelengths of signal. Common fiber types are single mode and multimode.
Single mode, which has a smaller diameter, is designed for longer
distances, and multimode is common in data-centers etc. but I've seen
single mode replacing multimode in a lot of cases due to costs coming down.
There's actually two different diameters of multimode, and you never want
to mix different fiber diameters. Larger diameter (multimode) fiber may
carry a single mode signal in a pinch, but this is a hack, and performance
may suffer.

Even patching in fiber will ideally involve a microscope designed to
inspect fiber and specialized cleaning tools since a small speck of dust or
oil from your hand can completely disrupt the signal on glass with a
diameter of 9 microns. Splicing or terminating fiber usually requires very
expensive tools, and is careful work. So I've seen a lot of this stuff
outsourced, even at large institutions. Fiber to residential homes is
great, but I wouldn't recommend fiber inside a typical home.
