Timbo, iTunes does have to be running but it should stay open the whole time, it doesn't need to be closed and reloaded.
Are you running SlimServer as a service? (left start automatically checked on installation) The plugin won't work if so. I won't be around until Monday but I'm sure the other SlimServer users can help with any problems...
